Question: Hello, I have a quick, but silly question. I’ve noticed alot of girls on my club team wear active ankles. I just wanted to know why you are suppossed to wear active ankles and what it help you do in volleyball. Thanks ![]()
Thank you for the question! Well I can see why younger players would be confused about this. Active Ankles are worn for 2 reasons. Either for prevention or the player needs extra support due to a previous injury.
Active Ankles protect your ankles when you roll them, but easily misunderstood is the fact that they don’t keep you from rolling your ankle all together. After tearing my ligament in my ankle the summer before my senior season, my doctor requested that I play with Active Ankles. To my surprise I still rolled my ankle, and it really scared me. I then found out that it doesn’t keep you from rolling your ankle all together, it protects your ankle when you roll it. Active Ankles keep your ankle from rolling to a point, where it keeps you from tearing anything.
Wearing Active Ankles is great, but there are some controversial issues that arise from the use of them. Experts argue today, but the overall idea is that by wearing any braces on your ankles, if inevitably makes them weaker. Your ankle becomes dependent on them, and when performing physical activity without them, you have a higher risk of injury. So to counteract that problem most brace users have a regular routine of ankle strengthening exercises that include bands and other things.
I hope that answered your question, please let us know!
